Buying Borehole Pumps from China: An Importer’s Factory Evaluation Checklist

China produces a large share of the world’s borehole submersible pumps. For an African importer, this is an opportunity — and a sourcing challenge. Among the many borehole pump manufacturers in China, capability varies widely: some suppliers are real factories with their own motors, test bays, and engineering teams, while others assemble or resell products made elsewhere. The difference rarely shows in a catalogue photo. It shows in consistent quality across batches, in spare parts two years later, and in how fast a technical question gets a real answer.

Borehole pump manufacturers in China: performance testing at the Ganquan factory

This article gives you a practical factory evaluation checklist. Use it when you assess any submersible pump OEM manufacturer — including us. Then we show, line by line, how Ganquan Pump answers each point, so you can judge us by the same standard.

The 6-Point Factory Evaluation Checklist

# What to check Why it matters What a strong answer looks like
1 Product line width One supplier for all well sizes Many series covering 6″–14″ class wells, wide flow and head range
2 Customization ability Your grid is not China’s grid 60Hz, 220V, 660V and other non-standard options
3 Testing and reports Trust needs evidence In-house test stand, per-unit test capability, accredited lab
4 Certifications Tender pre-qualification and customs Valid quality-system and product certifications with numbers
5 Complete-set supply Pump alone is not a system Pump + motor + cable + control panel from one factory
6 Export communication Time zones and language cost money Selection tools, engineer support, clear documentation

Let us go through each point.

1. Product Line Width: Can One Factory Cover Your Whole Market?

As an importer or wholesaler, you serve farmers with small wells, towns with large ones, and industrial users in between. If your supplier only makes two or three series, you will buy the rest elsewhere — and every extra supplier means another quality system, another spare-parts stock, another relationship to manage.

Ask the factory three questions:

  • What borehole diameters do your pumps cover?
  • What is your full flow and head range?
  • How many models and specifications do you actually manufacture?

How Ganquan answers: Our QJ/QJT borehole submersible pump line covers applicable well diameters from 150mm to 400mm, with ten series sized for minimum well diameters from 150mm to 350mm — roughly the 6-inch to 14-inch class. The range runs from 5 to 600 m³/h in flow and 6 to 600 m in head, with motors from 3 to 250 kW. The family is marketed as 10 series, more than 60 models, and over 800 specifications. Model naming is transparent: for example, 250QJ80-80/4 means a 250mm minimum well diameter, 80 m³/h flow, 80 m head, 4 stages. A stainless steel QJG variant is also listed in our group catalogue for corrosive water conditions. For most distributors, one Ganquan catalogue covers the whole borehole market they serve. See the full range at /products/borehole-pumps/.

2. Customization: 50Hz Pumps in a 60Hz Country

This is where first-time importers often get burned. Standard Chinese pumps are built for 380V, 50Hz, three-phase. Much of Africa runs 400–415V grids, and some countries — Liberia is the classic case — run 60Hz. A 50Hz pump on a 60Hz supply spins about 20% faster. Flow, head, power draw, and shaft stress all change. It will run, but not on its curve, and not for long.

Ask the factory: can you build to our voltage and frequency, and is that a routine order or a special project?

How Ganquan answers: Our standard is 380V ±5%, 50Hz ±1%, three-phase. Beyond that, the product manual lists 60Hz, 220V, and 660V as customizable builds. For other grid voltages (such as 415V systems), confirm the exact specification with our engineers before you order — we will tell you plainly what is standard, what is customizable, and what needs a factory confirmation. If you are not sure whether your site needs single-phase or three-phase, read our companion guide at /single-phase-vs-three-phase-borehole-pump/.

3. Testing and Reports: Evidence Before Payment

Any factory can send a nice nameplate photo. Fewer can prove what happens inside their test bay. For a submersible pump OEM manufacturer, ask for:

  • An in-house performance test stand, and its capacity (flow, head, power, voltage).
  • The ability to test each pump before shipment, with a report issued per unit or per batch.
  • Independent accreditation of the laboratory, so the reports carry weight outside China.

How Ganquan answers: Ganquan operates its own pump test station rated at national Grade-1 precision, with a test range of 220V–10kV, maximum test flow 25 m³/s, head up to 1000m, and power up to 2500kW. Every pump can be tested before it ships. Our large hydro-electric testing center holds CNAS laboratory accreditation (certificate CNAS L17869, valid to 2029-02-23) under ISO/IEC 17025, carrying the ILAC-MRA mark. In practical terms: reports issued within the laboratory’s accredited scope are covered by the ILAC-MRA mutual-recognition arrangement — one useful indicator of test quality. Acceptance of any test report in an overseas tender always remains subject to that project or tender authority’s own requirements, so confirm the documentation rules with your tender early. Our comprehensive pump performance test facility is additionally assessed at Grade-1 precision by the National Pump Product Quality Inspection and Testing Center (certificate WTGB202500076, valid to 2030-02-19).

4. Certifications: Valid, Numbered, and Checkable

Certificates are easy to claim. The only useful certificate is one with a number, an issuer, and a validity date you can verify. When you evaluate borehole pump manufacturers in China, write the certificate numbers into your audit sheet and check them.

How Ganquan answers:

Certification Number Valid until What it covers
Water-saving product certification, QJ borehole pumps ZSRK-JS1660-001-2025 2028-01-02 QJ series, 150–400mm wells, 3–315kW, per GB/T 2816-2014; first certified 2015-12-30; verifiable at www.zsrk.org.cn
ISO 9001:2015 quality management 60421Q0045R1M 2027-02-06 Design and production of borehole submersible pumps, hot-water well pumps, sewage pumps, tubular pumps, plus GQRK soft-start panels and GBS constant-pressure water supply panels
ISO 14001:2015 environmental management 17418E20081R2S 2027-03-25 English version with IAF MLA and CNAS marks
ISO 45001:2018 occupational health & safety 17417S20069R3S 2028-04-11 English version with IAF and CNAS marks

One honest note on scope: our certifications are Chinese national certifications plus internationally recognized laboratory accreditation, listed above with their numbers and validity dates — nothing more, nothing less. For destination-country conformity programs (such as SONCAP for Nigeria or PVOC for Kenya and Tanzania), certification is arranged per shipment — ask us early so time and cost go into your plan.

5. Complete-Set Supply: Pump, Cable, Panel, One Contract

A borehole pump is not a product; it is the heart of a system. The system also includes the submersible motor, the drop cable, the riser pipe and pump base, the gate valve, and the control panel. If you buy the pump from one supplier and the panel from another, every technical question — selection, matching, troubleshooting — has to cross a supplier boundary.

How Ganquan answers: We supply the complete set from one factory: pump end, water-filled submersible motor, matched cable (our selection tables specify copper cross-sections from 2.5 to 95 mm² per model, with double cables for large units), and control panels. Our electrical line includes GQRK soft-start panels, GBS constant-pressure variable water supply systems, and GQ-HW outdoor smart panels, covering 1.5–400kW. Our low-voltage switchgear (GCS, MNS, GGD series) holds CQC certification valid to 2031–2033 — and the certificate applicant, manufacturer, and producer are the same company. Pump and panel come from the same manufacturer, so matching decisions and technical responsibility stay with one supplier.

6. Export Communication: Engineers, Not Just Sales Agents

The last checkpoint is soft but decisive. Send the factory a real duty point — flow, head, well diameter, water temperature, voltage — and watch what comes back. An intermediary usually has to forward your question and wait. A factory’s own engineers can answer directly, with a selected model, a duty check, and the questions you forgot to ask.

How Ganquan answers: Send us your duty point and well data through /contact/ or use our online tool at /pump-selector/. Our selection documentation includes a dedicated selection manual with per-model performance tables covering 46 series and 555 models, which our engineers use for rapid model shortlisting. (A note on numbers: the selection manual counts finer series divisions — 46 series, 555 models — while the same borehole range is described commercially as 10 series and 800+ specifications. Both figures refer to the same QJ/QJT product family.) Final selections are confirmed against current factory data before we quote.
